La French Tech: France's Government-Backed Startup Revolution

The La French Tech initiative — history, structure, the Next 40 and French Tech 120, international communities, and results.

La French Tech: France's Government-Backed Startup Revolution

is something unusual: a government-created brand that actually works. Launched in 2013 by Fleur Pellerin (then Minister for SMEs, Innovation and the Digital Economy), it unified a fragmented ecosystem under a recognisable identity — the rooster logo, the red branding — and backed it with money, policy, and institutional support.

The bet paid off. France went from a marginal European startup market to the continent's leader in venture capital investment within a decade.

Structure and Institutions

Mission French Tech

The operational arm is Mission French Tech, housed within the Direction Générale des Entreprises (the business directorate of the Economy Ministry). It coordinates:

  • French Tech Next 40 — The 40 most mature French startups, selected annually. Receive priority access to government services.
  • French Tech 120 — The next 80 fastest-growing. Together with the Next 40, these 120 companies get personalised account management across public administration.
  • French Tech Visa — A fast-track 4-year residence permit for startup founders, employees, and investors. Available within weeks rather than the months typical of standard visa processes.
  • French Tech Rise — A programme specifically targeting startups from underrepresented founders.
  • French Tech Tremplin — Mentorship and €22,000 grants for entrepreneurs from disadvantaged backgrounds.

French Tech Capitals

Seventeen French metropolitan areas are designated : Paris, Lyon, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Nantes, Lille, Marseille-Aix, Rennes, Strasbourg, Grenoble, Montpellier, Nice, Clermont-Ferrand, Brest, and others. Each has a local team that organises events, mentoring, and connections.

French Tech Communities Abroad

Sixty-two international French Tech communities exist in cities with significant French entrepreneur populations: San Francisco, London, New York, Berlin, Tel Aviv, Singapore, São Paulo, and more. These serve as networking hubs and soft-power projections.
